Flannel is a type of textile spun from wool or cotton, or as is often the case in modern garments, tory burch wool or cotton mixed with another type of material, such as acrylic fiber, nylon or polyester. This warm and cozy fabric features a plain or twill weave and at least one side, typically the outer, with a thick nap that's soft to the touch. In the fashion world, flannel most often lends itself to outerwear such as button-up shirts, sleepwear, skirts, scarves and men's suits, though it also appears in winter-friendly undergarments.

Clear as Plaid

While it's often printed on flannel shirts, skirts, scarves or pajamas, plaid is not the exclusive domain of flannel. It's simply a pattern consisting of numerous straight lines -- often of varying thicknesses and in a range of complementary colors -- crossing each other at 90-degree angles to form squares of varied size. Plaid often makes use of differing color opacity, so that when lines intersect, they form darker-hued squares, resulting in a type of plaid pattern known specifically as tartan, though the terms “plaid” and “tartan” are interchangeable nowadays. Though synonymous with flannel, kate spade plaid patterns show up on everything from plain cotton button-ups to nylon bathing suits.

Ways to Wear

Plaid and flannel go hand-in-hand for good reason: They're both cozy and timelessly fashionable. Both the print and the fabric lend themselves especially well to fall fashion. The plaid-printed flannel shirt is a unisex option that goes with everything from slim-fit chinos and leather loafers to leggings and suede ankle boots. Plaid flannel loves layers, adding warmth and visual pop under a denim jacket or peacoat, whether in the form of a shirt or a scarf. The grunge-inspired flannel plaid skirt pairs perfectly with leggings, knee-high boots and a solid-colored turtleneck.

An Enduring Combo

Plaid flannel has seldom gone out of fashion since it transitioned from the world of lumberjacks and manual laborers and into the mainstream, starting with all-American ensembles in the 1950s and early '60s. In the 1970s, trucker chic inspired by cinema antiheroes and rock bands brought it back in vogue. At the time, the Pendleton, a hybrid shirt-jacket made from flannel and often offered in plaid, saw its peak. j crew Grunge repopularized plaid flannel -- sported open over a tee or wrapped around the waist -- in the 1990s, and the hipster fashion movement of the 2010s saw a resurgence of well-fitted, vintage-inspired plaids paired with unisex thick-framed glasses, bold skinny jeans and desert boots.
